The Blair County Antique Auto Club is gearing up for its 15th annual Car Cruise in downtown Altoona on Saturday, and organizers expect hundreds of vehicles and their owners to be on hand for the event.

Started by Rick and Nancy Spielvogle several years ago as a family-friendly event, the cruise includes vehicles of all shapes, sizes and years. Registration for anyone wanting to show off their vehicle is $5 and the show runs from 2:30 to 8 p.m. in the Heritage Plaza area.

“You can bring any kind of car, vintage, antique, modern or even if it is not finished,” Rick Spielvogle said.

The cruise draws anywhere from 400 to 500 vehicles to downtown Altoona, where participants and visitors can check out the vehicles, try their luck at a 50/50 drawing and listen to live music by Felix and the Hurricanes, who take the stage from 4 to 7 p.m. Door prizes are also on tap.

“It’s a great organization,” Felix drummer Bobby Watters said of the event. “All the cars are awesome, and we are just happy to be a part of it again.”

Reighard’s — America’s oldest gas station — will be featured on event T-shirts, the Spielvogles said.

While the event is billed as a get together for people to enjoy an end-of-summer bash, it also helps out local organizations, as food and refreshments will be available for sale by the Bellwood Boy Scouts, Hammers Street Church of God and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

In addition, a local charity will benefit from the event, Nancy Spielvogle said, noting that the charity will be chosen in a meeting after the Car Cruise.

Wrapping up the day’s activities will be a cruise around the city at 7 p.m.
