When you’re pregnant, there are be a lot of information to take in about what you should and shouldn’t do.

And with all the advice about avoiding soft cheese and taking folic acid until 12 weeks, there are some things you might miss.

One specialist emergency doctor has been posting on TikTok about the importance of wearing your seatbelt properly.

Dr Katie, who was 34 weeks pregnant herself when she posted the clip, says she wanted to highlight the advice after she treated a pregnant woman who had been in a car crash.

She explained: ‘Yesterday I was working in the emergency department and I was looking after a young lady who was in her third trimester of pregnancy and unfortunately she had been involved in a car accident.

‘As part of my assessment, I was asking her where she was wearing her seat belt and she indicated she was wearing it across her pregnant bump just like this.

‘And it dawned on me that not everyone may know the safest way to wear a seat belt during pregnancy if they’re travelling in a car.’

She explains you need to wear your seat belt underneath your bump and the shoulder strap should be above your bump, between your breasts.

Dr Kate adds: ‘You should have your seat as far back from the steering wheel as is safe to do so.

‘This is to minimise the impact of the airbags hitting you and your pregnant belly if they do go off.’

She also says that if you’re a mum-to-be and have an accident, even if it seems minor, you should see your obstetrician or midwife to ensure everything is ok.

The guidelines from the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) explains:

Other people commented on Dr Katie’s video to say they didn’t know this and found it very helpful.

One wrote: ‘I was taught this two hours before I was in a bad car accident at 22 weeks. It literally saved my son’s life.’

Another added: ‘Thank you so much for this! I’m 26 weeks and haven’t been told this.’
